Branagan Drive & Kearney Drive Safety Measures

Council voted at this weeks meeting to approve the recommendations made by Senior Traffic Engineer Shirlene Yee Yet. The recommendations are the outcome from the two year community consultative period by Council and the recent final objector's community meeting arranged by AGRA and managed by the COK. The recommendations and vote can be accessed on council's website under, “agenda's” and “Minutes.” The motion to accept the recommendations was opposed by Councillors Shewan and West.

At the 26th May AGRA Committee meeting Councillor Shewan explained that he put forward an amended motion at council to defer the decision for two of the speed humps in Branagan and Kearney. This so that residents affected by the humps in other parts of the roads could report back before these additional humps are installed. This amendment failed and Council accepted in full the council officer's recommendations. Councillor Trevor Shewan also mentioned a recent traffic calming project in the City of Kingston which has been a great success and the residents were very happy with it.

Senior Traffic Engineer Shirlene Yee Yet has emailed us the following report. Council approved the Local Area Traffic Management as below.

Design plans to be prepared for 3 speed cushions and 2 flat topped speed humps (at the school crossing and reserve). To install speed cushions or flat-topped speed humps at the following general locations subject to further design within the Aspendale Gardens local area:-

* At No. 10 and 5 Langslow Road

* At No. 54 and 35 Kearney Drive

* At the Shopping Centre and School on Kearney Drive at existing Children's School Crossing

* At No. 44 and 25 Branagan Drive (at Reserve)

* At No. 94 and 53 Branagan Drive

1. to undertake traffic surveys 6 months after the speed humps are installed to determine the effectiveness of the speed humps.

2. to consult residents of Gilchrist Way on the proposal to implement a “No Right Turn 5pm-6pm” into Gilchrist Way from Wells Road.

3. to advise all residents of Aspendale Gardens of Council's decision.

There were originally 9 recommendations so it appears that up to four were not proposed at this stage. We will clarify with Council. We are hopeful that the traffic management changes will be completed in the near future.
